City of West Chicago Receives Commendation for Water Fluoridation

West Chicago, Illinois: April 21, 2009 - The City of West Chicago’s Water Department has received a commendation from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) for achieving the highest standard of compliance with the Illinois Fluoridation Act for the year 2008.

The amount of fluoride present in the City’s water must consistently be within strict limits established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and regulated by the IDPH and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) in order to achieve the highest standard designation.

The addition of fluoride to drinking water is required by State and Federal regulations to promote dental health. Fluoride in the water helps to strengthen teeth and make them more resistant to dental caries.
