|Residential Building Permits
Whether you are thinking of home improvement, remodeling or building a new home, the City’s goal is to ensure quality construction for the homeowner. The City requires contractors to obtain a license by submitting the Contractor’s License (PDF - 124k) along with a licensing bond to the city. Contractors licensed by the State of Illinois (plumbers, roofers, etc.) need only submit a copy of their license for those permits within the respective discipline for which the license has been issued.
Furthermore, building permits are a required step in the process for new construction (including most accessory structures) and remodeling. A building permit is issued once plans that comply with City Code are received, reviewed and approved. The builder is responsible for requesting all required inspections as construction proceeds. Building Permit forms are available at City Hall (475 Main Street), at the West Chicago Police Department (325 Spencer Street), and on-line under Forms. To receive an application by mail, call (630) 293-2200 extension 131.
Examples of the types of construction or remodeling projects that require a residential building permit follow:
* New homes and home additions
* Home remodeling, including basement finishing
* Decks and patios
* Fences and sheds
* Swimming pools and hot tubs
* Roof replacements and siding
* Soffit and fascia
* Steps or stairs
* Electrical service upgrades
For residential buildings, an Application for Residential Occupancy (PDF - 27k) must be submitted and approved and a Certificate of Occupancy issued before the dwelling unit may be (re)occupied.
Payment for building permits may be made by check (payable to City of West Chicago), cash or credit card, with the exception being fire alarm permits. For a fire alarm permit cash or checks are acceptable. Please make checks payable to West Chicago Fire Protection District.
