West Chicago’s citywide collection event will take place May 3-7, 2010. Residents of single-family or two-family homes need only affix a total of eight (8) refuse stickers to their pile of ACCEPTABLE items placed at the curb on their regularly scheduled collection day.

Examples of acceptable items include, but are not limited to:

  • garage and attic clean-out debris,
  • latex paint containers with lids removed and all remaining paint dried, using an absorbant such as kitty litter, if necessary,
  • barbeque grills,
  • bicycles,
  • carpeting, if rolled into sections not exceeding four-foot lengths and not weighing more than 50 pounds per roll,
  • household construction materials (i.e., lumber, dry wall, plywood, household fixtures, etc),  bundled or placed in a 33-gallon refuse container and not weighing more than 50 pounds,
  • small household appliances (i.e., toasters, televisions, microwaves, etc.), and
  • furniture, box springs and mattresses.

Examples of unacceptable Items include, but not limited to:
  • hazardous waste,
  • compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)
  • tires, automotive parts, fluids and batteries (i.e., oil, transmission fluid, windshield washing fluid, starter, brake shoes, etc.),
  • household batteries,
  • oil based paint,
  • pesticides, and
  • propane tanks.
Please note that household hazardous wastes should be disposed of through the special collection events coordinated by DuPage County. Document shreddding and electronic collection events have been scheduled for March and April and and are posted on the County's website, as well.

The City of West Chicago encourages all residents to do some “spring cleaning” and take advantage of these annual community improvement events.
