For those looking for the many benefits that yoga provides, join Healthy West Chicago on the mat this fall. The not-for-profit is offering free in-person gentle yoga classes in partnership with the West Chicago Public Library District.
According to Program Administrator Carly Smitherman, research has shown many amazing benefits to the practice of yoga. Benefits include stress relief and improvement of mental and emotional health which, during these times of COVID, can be useful for all. Yoga has helped its practitioners to relieve pain, improve health, support good health habits, and help with chronic disease management to improve quality of life.
Classes will be held on the Library’s lawn at 118 W. Washington St. West Chicago on Thursday mornings at 8:30 a.m. and Tuesday evenings at 6:00 p.m., weather permitting.
Outdoor morning classes will be 45-minutes in length and consist of stretching and restoration poses led by certified yoga instructor, Amanda Bryant.
“Enjoy your time in nature, without equipment or distractions, and find a bit of peace in the midst of stressful times. Take this practice off the mat and into your everyday,” said Smitherman.
Wind down the day with evening classes, led by Tracy Leach, Certified Yoga Instructor. Tracy’s class will include focus on simple breath to movement postures and breathing exercises to gently connect mind & body.
“The evening classes are a perfect way for the new or seasoned yogi to end the day with some selfcare. See you on your mat!”
All in-person classes are limited due to social distancing guidelines at this time. The Library’s lawn will be marked with spots six-feet apart for participants’ ease. The Library will be closed during class times, there are no bathrooms on site. Wearing a mask to class on day one is required, and participants will need to sign a waiver.
