Thanksgiving is here, a favorite holiday for many as it involves a time of getting together with family and friends to share a meal, conversation and laughter. Due to different circumstance, sometimes it is not possible to get together on the designated holiday. No matter when the celebration takes place, it becomes a cherished memory.

- Six students from West Chicago Community High School were selected by audition for the 2024 Illinois Music Education Association District 9 Honor Festival Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Dundee-Crown High School. The students are under the direction of Brandon Fantozzi, Choir; Marissa Janiszewski, Band; and Sara Austin, Orchestra. This prestigious event brought together top student musicians from across the region to showcase their talents in band, choir and orchestra.
The students are Sentia Irakoze, alto 2; Mia Marin, violin; Milly Mora-Zarco, bass 1. Jessie Myers. percussion; Gwen Nika, flute; and Nick Riconosciuto, bass 2.
The students competed against more than 1,200 students in band, choir, and orchestra from DuPage, Kane and parts of Will and Kendall counties. The highly competitive auditions required students to prepare scales, etudes and/or selected excerpts of music pieces. - At the latest meet, Wheaton Academy Mathletes did quite well. Sophomores placed second, led by Ruth Yang, Henderson Zhao, and James Ke. Ruth Yang, who achieved a rare perfect score, one of only two competitors only across five schools to accomplish this. Juniors claimed first place, led by Simon Zhou, Andrea Ngo, Luke Osterholm, Min Min DiGiacoma, and Andy Chen. com
- Seven Wheaton Academy students participated in the 2024 Illinois Music Education Association District 9 Honor Festival Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Dundee-Crown High School. Toby Morden played drums and timpani, participating in both the Jazz Band and Honors Orchestra. Bekah Jarvis played clarinet in the Honors Band. Claire Jeong played violin in the Honors Orchestra. - Danielle Spence, West Chicago Park District Marketing & Communications Manager, had the opportunity to promote the COD Writing Studies at the Fall Open House of College of DuPage Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024. She said, “It was great to meet incoming students and talk about my experience in the program.” Open house guests visited with more than 60 program representatives to discover COD’s academic offerings, create meaningful connections and identify possible career paths.
COD Writing Studies is a two-time national award-winning program. It has earned the Writing Program Certificate of Excellence from the Conference on College Composition and Communication and the Diana Hacker TYCA Outstanding Programs in English Award from the National Council of Teachers of English. Students taking courses in the program gain hands-on experiences partnering with local not-for-profits, interviewing professionals in their field, and networking with professional writers via the Writing Professionally lecture series. merleburl.com
- At the 42nd Annual Illinois Arborist Association Conference recently held in Tinley Park, a team organized the Jim Scheuster Memorial Plant Health Care Demonstration Area. Scheuster, who passed away May 18, 2019, was a resident of West Chicago for many years. He worked through University of Illinois Extension as a horticulture specialist, teacher and Master Gardener for more than 40 years. In 2008, he returned to the Champaign/Urbana area for the last few years of his career with the U of I as a pesticide trainer, until his retirement in 2011. Those who knew Scheuster appreciated how quickly he answered questions about their trees and the proper care. Probably many trees survived in West Chicago because of his assistance. com
- West Chicago resident Al Murphy was recognized for his 10 years serving as the District 6 Commissioner on the DuPage County Forest Preserve Board. He was a consistent supporter of natural resource projects, which included Herrick Lake and St. James Farm. He also supported the decision for the removal of the Graue Mill dam at Fullersburg Woods. He lost his bid for reelection to the Democrat candidate Rick Gieser by 242 votes. In his Facebook post, Murphy said, “ I have been very blessed to have been your Commissioner for the last 10 years where I was able to work on many projects that have been important for the community and to me personally… I am proud of the work I have been able to accomplish.”
- In a Daily Herald front page article about the Northern Illinois Food Bank, West Chicago resident Shannon Thompson was mentioned in the article, plus there was a photograph. She is the Director of Volunteers and has been an employee for 23 years. The organization is celebrating its 25th anniversary of its Holiday Meal Box Program.

- The City of West Chicago free recycling for the holiday lights and extension cords begins Friday, Nov. 29, 2024, and continues through Friday, January 17, 2025. The offer is open to residents, businesses, clubs, churches and organizations. Drop-off locations are City Hall, 475 Main St.;New Hope United Methodist Church, by east exterior door at 643 E. Washington St.; Murphy Ace Hardware, 319 S. Neltnor Blvd; Water Treatment Plant, 1400 W. Hawthorne Lane; West Chicago Public Library, 118 W. Washington St.; the ARC Center, 201 W. National St.; and Jewel-Osco, 177 E. Roosevelt Road.Coordinating the the program are the West Chicago Environmental Commission, the City of West Chicago, SCARCE and Groot Industries. - There are two positions available on the West Chicago Historical Preservation Commission, The Commission meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at West Chicago City Hall. - At the Monday, Nov. 18, 2024 meeting, City Council approved two special use ordinances for the expansion of parking lots at two West Chicago Elementary School District 33 schools. They are Pioneer School and Leman Middle School
Also approved was a zoning Map Amendment for the Woodland subdivision. The Item Summary stated, “Habitat for Humanity is proposing to develop the Woodland rRdge subdivision with four townhouse buildings, which are considered multiple-family dwelling structures and are not permitted in the current zoning district of R-3 Single family Residential…The petitioner is therefore seeking…to place the property in the R-6 District. The property is roughly 1.75 acres.”
Council approved a Zoning Map Amendment Preliminary Plat of Subdivision and Preliminary Planned Unit Development Ordinances. The Item stated, “Rosewood USA d/b/a Rosewood Living, Inc. petitions …. for a 139-unit townhome style development , known as Redwood…a 42.49 acre vacant tract of land made up of two parcels located on the north side of Route 64 at Atlantic Drive.”
Also approved was a resolution for an Intergovernmental Agreement with DuPage County for Lighted Street Name Signs at Kress Road and Roosevelt Road and Fabyan Parkway and Roosevelt Road.
WEST CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT
- This Thanksgiving season, the West Chicago Police Department joins the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies to ensure holiday travelers are buckled up and driving sober. The "Click It or Ticket" and "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" enforcement campaign started Thursday, 22 and ends Saturday, Dec. 2.
"The "Click It or Ticket" and "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaigns emphasize safety education, strong laws and law enforcement's commitment to saving lives. The goal of this high-visibility effort is to reduce motor vehicle crashes, injuries, and fatalities. Proper seatbelt use is the most effective way to protect vehicle occupants. When celebrating with alcohol or other impairing substances, persons should make plans for a sober ride home. Some ways include calling a taxi, taking mass transit, or asking a family member to get y home safely, using ride share service or opting for public transportation. TheThanksgiving enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by Illinois Department of Transportation.
- The West Chicago Police Department is once again participating in the US Marines Toys for Tots Foundation program. The ages are from infant through 16 years of age. Drop off locations for the new, unwrapped toys are West Chicago Police Department, 325 Spencer St.; City Hall, 475 Main St.; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6791, 431 N. Neltnor Blvd.; American Legion Post 300, 123 Main St.; and Haggerty Ford, 330 E. Roosevelt Road. Deadline is Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024. Toys then are sorted and distributed throughout DuPage County to families in need. Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. It was founded in 1947

- West Chicago Police Sergeant Robbi Peterson attended the International Law Enforcement Torch Run conference in San Antonio Conference . He reported once again Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics received recognition for its outstanding efforts on behalf of Special Olympics Illinois. “Number 2 in the world in fundraising. This group is just a small representation of the thousands of officers across Illinois that show up for the athletes and make this possible. So proud to represent and be apart of this amazing organization.” com
- DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and West Chicago Chief of Police Colin Fleury announced Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state’s motion to deny pre-trial release for a West Chicago teen accused in the shooting death of two individuals on Nov, 9, 2024. Ivan Ramirez, 18 ,of the 800 block of Parkside Avenue, appeared in First Appearance Court charged with two counts of First Degree Murder and one count of Attempt Armed Robbery with a Firearm (Class 1 Felony). On Nov.12, 2024, Ramirez’s codefendant Xavier Arevalo, 17, of the 400 block of Kenwood, who is charged as an adult, appeared in First Appearance Court where he was ordered detained pre-trial. Ramirez’ appearance was delayed because he was hospitalized with a gunshot wound. Arevalo is facing identical charges. They are charged with Alejandro Rios and Antonio Delgado being killed while Arevalo and Ramirez were robbing them during a deal to buy THC vaping cartridges. - West Chicago Fire Protection District hosts a retirement and promotion event at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, 2024, at fire district headquarters, 200 Fremont St. BattalionChief Kenneth Zahara , retires after serving 23 years in the District. Being promoted to Battalion Chief is Brian Jankowski. Firefighter/paramedic is promoted the position of Lieutenant.
- As the West Chicago Public Library prepared for winter the staff invited gnomes. Sadly, the gnomes got lost. Children can help find the 40 gnomes. Using a guide, the youths can circle the lost gnomes and return the guide to the Youth Services Department and receive a special prize.
- In the Consolidated Election Tuesday, April 1, 2025, all township elected official are up for election. Elected officials are Supervisor, Clerk, Road Commissioner, Assessor and four Trustees. To determine who will be on the slate, the established political parties in the Township of Winfield and Wayne hold caucuses Tuesday, December 3, 2024. To attend, persons must be registered voters of the political party.
The Winfield Republican Party Township Caucus is at 7 p.m. in the ARC Center, 201 W. National St. Registration is at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting is at 7:00 p.m. The Winfield Township Democratic Organization. Caucus is at 6 p.m. at Winfield Park District, ON020 County Farm Road. - DuPage County won the Excellence in Strategic Planning Award for 2024by the National Association of Counties EDGE. DuPage County is one of four inaugural winners of the award, along with Buncombe County, North Carolina; Citrus County, Florida; and Harris County, Precinct 2, Texas. The award recognizes counties that have created and communicated a thoughtful and comprehensive annual strategic plan to help improve the services and infrastructure they provide to their constituents. According to NACo, DuPage County demonstrated excellence in clearly defining its mission, vision, and values. DuPage County received an outstanding rating in communicating their strategic planning process with their community, leveraging a variety of tactics for community engagement including public meetings, social media, in-person events, emails, and community partners.
