MERLE’S CORNER
It is hard to believe Labor Day is almost here, Monday, September 2, to be exact. It is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday of September. According to Wikipedia, the holiday honors and recognizes the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States,.
Before it became a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. Municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886. A movement developed to secure state legislation. On February 21, 1887, Oregon was the first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day. By the end of the 1880’s many states followed suit. Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September a legal holiday on June 28, 1894.
