Effective January 2, 2018, the METRA lot daily parking rate will increase by $0.25 to $1.75. The rate increase is necessary due to the various improvements made over the last several years that were paid for using the City’s reserve funds, and to pay for future projects that are planned for the commuter station and commuter lots.
Earlier this year, the City installed equipment to allow the use of credit cards for payment of parking spaces. The annual maintenance fee for adding this convenience for our customers on four machines is approximately $4,000. The City is also bearing the cost of service fees associated with the credit card usage ($7,000-$8,000 annually), immediately lowering its net position from previous years.
Also in 2017, the City replaced the security cameras that cover the station and the three parking lots at a cost approximating $79,000, and will be adding four security cameras in the tunnel in 2018. METRA is contributing $10,000 to next year’s project.
Planned improvements continue next year, with the City replacing the dead and underperforming landscaping at a cost of $40,000, as well as repairing and resurfacing two of the three parking lots at a cost of $60,000. The repair and resurface project, which would actually cost $200,000 if done completely, will be limited to the worst sections of the lots (e.g. the drive aisles) due to budget constraints. Improvements to the third parking lot will need to be postponed until additional funds become available.
A daily rate increase to $2.00 is actually necessary to properly and responsibly ensure the funds required for improvements; however METRA’s policy to limit increases to $0.25 at a time may require the City to petition METRA in the future should that additional money be needed to cover the costs associated with the station and parking lots.
