Based on advisement from the City’s Police Department Command Staff, this decision has been made out of an abundance of caution with the intention to protect the West Chicago community from any potential copycat scenarios, and also out of respect for the victims and the Highland Park community.
Mayor Pineda shared the following message on behalf of the City in response to this decision.
“The safety of our community members will always be at the forefront of how our City operates. As our country tries to understand this senseless act of violence, the City finds it necessary to avoid the risk of allowing this type of incident to re-occur within our own community. The event that occurred in Highland Park is a tragedy for us all, and my heart goes out to the entire Highland Park community for the tremendous sorrow in which they are now experiencing.”
