Message from Mayor Pineda to All West Chicago Students in the Class of 2020: April 29, 2020

April 29, 2020 By City of West Chicago

Dear West Chicago Community High School and Wheaton Academy Class of 2020,

You may not appreciate it right now given the disruption it is causing in your lives, but we are living in historic times. The outbreak of COVID-19 has become a defining moment for us, for our community, our country, and our world.

The novel virus has delivered a health crisis the magnitude of which we have not seen in over 100 years, a record-setting economic fallout, and unprecedented social changes.

We are all trying to adjust to a new normal, one that is not without its challenges and disappointments. While I am sure you never envisioned this situation at the end of your high school career, I am also sure that you all have it within yourselves to rise to the occasion and finish strong.

Maybe harder is the reality that the cherished milestones for generations of high school seniors who have gone before you – the last High School band and orchestra concerts, senior prom, honors night, and graduation – have had to be cancelled. The entire community and I understand the profound disappointment you must be feeling. However, the hard fact is that sometimes in life things are simply beyond our control, testing our resilience and strengthening our character. I believe this is one such moment.

With the passage of time and the budding prospects of “what comes next”, you have much to which to look forward. I encourage you to consider the future opportunities this pandemic holds for you and for our world. There will be advancements and positive changes to our society; innovations in every field, and new ways of doing business. New technologies will be developed, new medical breakthroughs and cultural norms established. And through the resilience that you are acquiring, and an unstoppable confidence in your abilities to succeed, you will lead the way.

You will someday look back on this time in your lives and share the adversity our world faced and the strength that got us through it. Tell your story, inspiring the courage needed to get through those defining times in the future, and you will be role models for the next generation.

As one proud West Chicago graduate (Wildcat) to another, congratulations on your great accomplishments these past four years. Whether you are headed to college, vocational training or work, you have earned our admiration and esteem.

All the best to you,

Ruben Pineda
Mayor of West Chicago

Ruben Pineda
Alcalde de West Chicago
