City Job Opportunity: Water Treatment Plant Superintendent

The City of West Chicago is a rapidly growing community located in the western suburbs of Chicago seeking a Public Works Water Treatment Plant Superintendent.

The superintendent under the direction of the Director of Public Works will be responsible for directing, managing, supervising, and coordinating the activities and operations of the Water Treatment Plant Division.  The Water Treatment Plant Division is generally responsible for the operation and maintenance of a centralized 9 MGD lime softening water treatment plant, daily treatment and chemical dosing, sampling, reporting, and all other aspects related to water treatment.

The position is responsible for supervising work involving the development and implementa­tion of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned programs within the Water Treatment Plant Division, including but not limited to, capital improvements projects related to Water Treatment Plant (WTP); Inspect and identify needs of repairs/maintenance for components within the WTP; Negotiate and manage contracts, including professional engineering contracts; Supervise contractors and coordinate work activities with other Public Works Divisions; Inspect the work completed by contractors to ensure that specifications are met and all work complies with Federal, State, and Local standards; Oversee the purchasing of equipment related to WTP; Oversee, organize and schedule equipment maintenance including parts and materials; Manage equipment/parts inventory within WTP; Calculate, order and accept delivery of chemical related to WTP; Assist with City-wide snow removal operations, etc.; Coordinate and communicate with other Divisions within Public Works departments in the City, other governmental entities, residents, and businesses. Direct supervision, scheduling, training, and periodic performance evaluation of personnel within the Water Treatment Plant Division. Assist the Director with administrative functions of the Division, including prioritizing the WTP Division annual budget.

The position requires a minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in Water Treatment Plant operations with an extensive background in lime softening and iron removal process; A minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience; Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire, a valid Class A Water Supply Operator Certificate issued by the State of Illinois; a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or in a closely related field is preferred but not required. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, a valid Illinois Class B CDL driver’s license with tanker endorsement and without an airbrake restriction is preferred, but not required.
