Construction Newsletter #1 – July 1, 2019
The purpose of this newsletter is to inform you that the 2019 Washington Street Reconstruction Project (Project) is anticipated to begin the week of Monday, July 8, 2019. This tentative start date is based upon a preliminary schedule provided by the Contractor (Schroeder Asphalt Services, Inc.) and is subject to change based on weather conditions and/or railroad coordination. The anticipated Project completion date is the week of October 28, 2019, weather permitting.
The Project mainly consists of the reconstruction of Washington Street, between Clara Street and Arbor Avenue. The Project’s work activities include, but are not limited to, full-depth Portland cement concrete pavement removal and full-depth hot-mix-asphalt roadway installation, thermoplastic pavement markings, curb and gutter replacement, sidewalk and ADA sidewalk ramp replacement, and all incidental and collateral work necessary to complete the Project. The net length of improvements is approximately 1,726 feet (0.33 miles)
The Project will be completed in four (4) phases, with Phase I and Phase II construction consisting mainly of the reconstruction of Washington Street, between Clara Street and Wood Street. During these phases, Washington Street will be closed to all through traffic between Clara Street and Wood Street, across both the Union Pacific and Canadian National railroad crossings. During these phases, it is anticipated that the railroad companies, Union Pacific (UP) and Canadian National (CN), will be repairing their railroad crossings at and near their intersection with Washington Street. During Phase I and II, Washington Street will remain open to both eastbound and westbound traffic between Wood Street and Arbor Avenue. Access to Aurora Street will remain open from the east, but may be restricted at times. Phase I and Phase II is anticipated to be completed by the end of August 2019, weather permitting, at which time Phase III will immediately begin.
Once Phase III beings, Washington Street will be restricted to one-way eastbound traffic only between Wood Street and Arbor Avenue. Washington Street between Clara Street and Aurora Street will be opened to both eastbound and west bound traffic. More information regarding Phase III and Phase IV construction will be provided in a future Construction Newsletters.
The 2019 Washington Street Reconstruction Project is partially being funded by the State of Illinois through a program administered by its Department of Transportation (IDOT). Therefore IDOT requirements, standards, processes, and schedules to which must be adhered and followed.
