The City of West Chicago is a rapidly growing community located in the western suburbs of Chicago seeking a Public Works Street Superintendent.
The superintendent, under the direction of the Director of Public Works, will be responsible for directing, managing, supervising and coordinating the activities and operations of the Street Division. The Streets Division is responsible for maintenance of 175 lane miles of roadways, 111 miles of sidewalk, alleys, parkway trees, street sweeping, signs, storm sewers, streetlights, snow and ice removal, pavement markings and parkway restoration.
The position is responsible for supervising work involving the development and implementation of long range transportation planning, signs and pavement markings, construction of streets and traffic signal systems; streetlights; storm sewer system maintenance; vehicle service levels; as well as maintenance and repair of streets, alleys, parkways, trees, sidewalks, curbs, buildings and grounds. Oversee and direct the removal of snow and ice from City streets, sidewalks, parking lots and entryways; street sweeping program; tree removal; trimming and tree planting programs; cemetery maintenance program; special events and festivals. Operate heavy equipment as needed. Manage and oversee the computer operation and reporting for the fuel dispensing system. Have, or ability to obtain, an Illinois UST Class A/B/C Operator Certificate; oversee fuel system operation, including monitoring the tank gauging system; ordering fuel, and maintaining required inspection logs for the fuel dispensing system in compliance with the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Coordinate with other divisions within Public Works, departments in the City, other governmental entities, residents and businesses. Direct supervision of personnel within the Street Division. Position requires five years of increasingly responsible experience in the field of Public Works including two years of supervisory responsibility. A bachelor’s degree in management, administration, civil engineering or closely related field preferred but not required. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire a valid Illinois Class B CDL driver’s license with tanker endorsement and without an airbrake restriction.
