FAQs

What phone number do I call when I need a police officer?
A: 9-1-1 is a response number to be used anytime that a police officer is needed - whether for an emergency or non-emergency. 9-1-1 should be used for both service and emergency calls - it is a police response number. 9-1-1 can be used from a traditional phone or a cellular phone.

Residents that need information or administrative services may call (630) 293-2222 during regular business hours. Regular business hours are Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. After business hours if you dial 630-293-2222 please stay on the line and your call will be forwarded to the dispatch center.

How do I make a report when the office is closed?
After regular business hours, anyone wanting to make a police report may summon an officer by using the phone located in the Police Station front door entryway. This phone goes directly to the dispatch center. The center will inform an officer that someone at the station needs to speak with the police or residents may call 9-1-1 from any location in West Chicago and an officer will be dispatched.

What do I do if approached by solicitors?
With the advent of summer weather, residents typically experience an increase in door-to-door solicitors. As such, the West Chicago Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind residents of the City's ordinance requiring that solicitors register at the Police Department. If a prospective solicitor's application for registration is approved, he/she is issued an identification card. This ID card will include the City seal, a photo of the solicitor and an expiration date. Per the ordinance, this ID card must be displayed by the solicitor while he/she is engaged in sales activities.

If you are approached by a solicitor who is not able to produce a City-issued solicitor ID card, the Police Department encourages you NOT to conduct business with this person. Further, we would ask that you contact 911 immediately to report the incident.

The City's solicitor ordinance contains a provision for residents who do not want to be contacted by door-to-door salespeople. If a resident chooses this option, appropriate signage can be produced by following the templates provided, or a preprinted weatherproof card is available at City Hall, 475 Main Street.

Also, City of West Chicago residents have the right to prohibit unsubscribed-to periodicals being left at their homes (other than telephone directories and those periodicals delivered by the U.S. Mail or other common carriers). They also have the right to regulate the ability of registered or exempt (a person age 17 and under, who is participating in fundraising programs) solicitors, to leave unwanted promotional material for goods and services. Residents may create a weather-proof (laminated) sign that conforms to the specifications contained in the Anti-Solicitation Signage Ordinances, or may visit City Hall to purchase such signage, which should then be posted to the front of the property. Additionally, residents who post such signs are required to submit their name and address to City Hall so that the address may be identified to those individuals and/or groups making the deliveries, as another way to prevent unwanted materials being left. Click here for sign templates.

How do I contest a parking ticket?
You may request an Administrative Hearing concerning the ticket. This request must be made at the West Chicago Police Station or by calling (630) 293-2222. Fines not paid by the due date are doubled.

How do I pay a traffic fine?
Instructions for the payment of traffic fines are written on the back of the citation. Fines and questions should be directed to the DuPage County Clerk, (630) 407-8600 or the Kane County Clerk's Office, (630) 208-3319.

What is the community curfew?
It is unlawful for a person less than seventeen (17) years of age to be present at or upon any public assembly, building, place, street or highway at the following times unless accompanied and supervised by a parent, legal guardian or other responsible companion at least eighteen (18) years of age approved by a parent or legal guardian or unless engaged in a business or occupation which the laws of this state authorize a person less than seventeen (17) years of age to perform:
(1) Between 12:01 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Saturday;
(2) Between 12:01 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Sunday; and
(3) Between 11:00 p.m. on Sunday to Thursday, inclusive, and 6:00 a.m. on the following day.

It is unlawful for a parent, legal guardian or other person to knowingly permit a person in his custody or control to violate the City’s curfew ordinance.
