All Aboard for Train Saturdays on Turner Court: Where Art, History & Generations Meet

All Aboard for Train Saturdays on Turner Court: Where Art, History & Generations Meet

Trains have long been part of West Chicago’s story—so much so that the city itself owes its founding to the railroads. But trains haven’t just connected tracks and towns; they’ve connected people, families, and generations.

Train Saturdays on Turner Court brings that spirit to life on select Saturdays this summer:
July 19, August 9, and August 23 from 10:00 a.m. to noon at 134 Turner Court.

Hosted by the West Chicago City Museum in partnership with Gallery 200, this event series invites families, rail fans, and art lovers to explore the legacy of trains in our community—both in motion and in memory.

Why the Railroad Matters

West Chicago’s history begins at the tracks. The city grew from a railroad junction where the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad met other lines in the mid-1800s. Since then, railroads have played a vital role in connecting residents to opportunity, commerce, and each other.

The Museum’s historic 1860s CB&Q Depot offers visitors the chance to experience this story firsthand. Exhibits include a model of the 1869 Chicago & North Western Roundhouse, which once stood in West Chicago and served as a symbol of the city’s industrial strength and innovation.

Train-Themed Art on Display

Just steps away, train-inspired art is on view at Gallery 200’s renewed Main Street exhibition space located at 203 Turner Court. Operated by People Made Visible, the gallery showcases the work of local railroad photographer Philip Weibler, who will be attending July 19, and others celebrating the iconic presence of trains in everyday life.

Each Train Saturday gives visitors a chance to meet the artists, talk trains, and reflect on the artistic side of transportation history.

West Chicago History Now Online

Want to keep exploring after your Train Saturdays visit—or dive into local history from home? The West Chicago City Museum, located at 132 Main Street, is open Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and offers changing exhibits that tell the story of the city’s 175-year evolution.

For those who prefer to explore at their own pace, the Museum now offers a new online database—now live at wegohistory.com—with nearly 1,500 artifacts, photographs, and documents from the community’s collection. The searchable platform is perfect for students, families, and anyone curious about West Chicago’s rich heritage—railroads included.

Whether you're discovering long-lost storefronts, vintage railroad memorabilia, or local family stories, the digital collection makes it easy to connect with West Chicago’s past—anytime, anywhere.

More to Explore Downtown

Make the most of your visit by exploring the vibrant heart of downtown West Chicago, where you'll find:

  • A rotating art exhibition at Gallery 200 (both at 200 Main Street and 103 W. Washington Street), where artwork is available for purchase—perfect for those looking to take home a unique piece of West Chicago.
  • Seven colorful murals celebrating the species of Illinois’ prairies that overlook the adjacent Illinois Prairie Path.
  • A mural by artist Rich Lo in the traditional Japanese ukiyo-e style, honoring West Chicago Community High School’s upcoming 100th anniversary—part of the Waves of DuPage exhibit and located at Gallery 200, 103 W. Washington Street.
  • A full-size historic train engine on display near Sesquicentennial Park, a favorite photo stop for rail enthusiasts and families alike.
  • The Kruse House Museum, a preserved 1917 American Foursquare home of a Chicago & North Western Railway ticket collector, located at 527 Main Street offers a rare glimpse into early 20th-century family life and is open from noon until 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
  • Locally owned shops, restaurants, and businesses throughout the downtown area offering everything from coffee and tacos to gifts and antiques.

Downtown West Chicago is full of charm, creativity, and history—plan to stay awhile and see what you discover.

Connecting Generations Through Trains

Whether you’re sharing childhood memories of trainspotting, showing your kids how model trains run, or learning something new together, Train Saturdays is about more than locomotives—it’s about connection. It’s a chance for generations to gather, reminisce, and create new stories inspired by the rhythms of rail and the heart of West Chicago.

At Home with Merle Burleigh – July 16, 2025

At Home with Merle

MERLE’S CORNER

Many readers of my column are dog lovers. With the launching of her business, Pebbles and Olivine Company, West Chicago resident Liz Ramirez attributes its beginnings to the loss of her soul dog, Pebbles. “My love for gemstones has grown over the past few years, but it was the loss of my soul dog, Pebbles, that truly transformed my hobby into something deeper. In my grief, I turned to making jewelry as a way to heal and find peace — and in that journey, I discovered a passion I felt called to share with others.”

She crafts each piece of jewelry from her home studio in West Chicago. “My designs often come to life intuitively, sparked by the colors, textures, and spirit of the beads and materials. I love creating simple, minimalist styles but I’m equally drawn to the challenge and artistry of wire work. Working with gemstones has become a daily meditation for me — a practice in mindfulness, connection, and joy. Each stone tells a story through its colors, shapes, and unique patterns, and carries a meaning or intention waiting to be discovered.”

The creation of the pieces of jewelry bring light back into her own life and one she wants to share with others. “Pebbles, my sweet and gentle Chihuahua, was a soul full of love. I’ll never forget the day I met her; she crawled into my lap and fell asleep, as though she had chosen me. Her quiet strength and loving spirit during her last months continue to inspire me every day to dream big and keep moving forward.”

Her designs often come to life intuitively, sparked by the colors, textures, and spirit of the beads and materials. She loves creating simple, minimalist styles but also is drawn to the challenge and artistry of wire work. Ramirez creates a variety of gemstone, crystal, and glass bead jewelry, such as bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. For those looking for something special, she will create a custom pieces that hold personal feeling.

To view her jewelry, visit pebblesandolivineco.myshopify.com, or follow her on pebblesandolivineco.myshopify.com. Her email is pebblesandolivineco@gmail.com. Ramirez is wanting to collaborate with local businesses to make her jewelry more accessible to the local community. “My dream for Pebbles and Olivine Co is to become a source of joy, healing, and inspiration for others.” https://merleburl.com

Prairie Landing Golf Club, a public golf course. is owned by DuPage Airport, and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. Construction started in 1991, transforming a former marshland into a links-style course. To create the course's topography, 300,000 cubic yards of dirt from a DuPage Airport runway were moved to the course. Play on the course started in 1994 and in 1995, Prairie Landing celebrated its first full year of play.

The 1868 historic Italianate-style McChesney House was relocated to the site in 1992. • This spring eight third, fourth and fifth graders at Wegner School teamed up with Jel Sert for a “Top Secret” challenge to invent a brand-new treat. The students visited Jel Sert, put on lab coats, signed Non-Disclosure Agreements and worked with professional food scientists. This was more than a class project, they were inventors and innovators in a partnership with a business. The ”Top Secret” product is now officially launched.

Per the press release from Jel Sert, “Fla-Vor-Ice, in partnership with @Crayola, invited eight students from Wegner Elementary, our local community school, to collaborate on our first-ever kid-created Fla-Vor-Ice flavor: Banana Mango. Inspired by the returning Dandelion color from Crayola, this limited-edition treat is more than just a fun summer flavor; it’s a celebration of kids’ creativity brought to life through real food science and hands-on experimentation. This collaboration goes far beyond traditional consumer research, empowering an incredible group of kids to help shape a product from concept to shelf. As a family-owned company since 1926, Jel Sert is proud to champion this spirit of creativity and innovation at every stage of product development.” To view the  full behind-the-scenes video , visit: https://bit.ly/40FNMSh. Officers entered the building at which time the defendant allegedly surrendered her firearm, a Glock 43x handgun. Annual Water System Leak Survey Underway through July

June 27, 2025 By City of West Chicago

Associated Technical Services (ATS), a specialized contractor retained by the City of West Chicago, began the City’s 2025 water system leak survey during the week of June 16. The team is expected to complete its work by the end of July.

As with past surveys, ATS technicians will be using highly sensitive listening equipment on fire hydrants and water valves across the community to detect possible leaks in the underground water distribution system. These devices help identify unusual sounds or pressure changes that may indicate a leak below the surface—before it becomes visible or causes damage.

What To Know:
  • Marked Vehicles: ATS crews will be operating from clearly marked vehicles like the one shown here.
  • Identification: All ATS personnel will carry proper identification and should be able to present it upon request.
  • No Service Disruption: This work does not require entry into homes or businesses and will not disrupt water service.
  • Short-Term Presence: Survey activity will be brief at each location and conducted entirely from the public right-of-way.
Why This Matters:
Routine leak surveys are an essential part of maintaining a safe and reliable water system. Undetected leaks not only waste water and increase operational costs but can also lead to larger infrastructure problems over time. By identifying and repairing leaks early, the City can:
  • Reduce water loss and protect natural resources
  • Minimize costly emergency repairs
  • Maintain water pressure and service reliability
  • Support long-term sustainability of the City’s infrastructure

This proactive maintenance helps ensure that West Chicago continues to deliver high-quality water service to residents and businesses.

If there are questions about the leak detection program, contact the City’s Public Works Department. If suspicious activity is noticed that does not correlate with this activity, please contact the West Chicago Police Department.
