Annual Water System Leak Survey Underway through July

June 27, 2025 By City of West Chicago

Associated Technical Services (ATS), a specialized contractor retained by the City of West Chicago, began the City’s 2025 water system leak survey during the week of June 16. The team is expected to complete its work by the end of July.

As with past surveys, ATS technicians will be using highly sensitive listening equipment on fire hydrants and water valves across the community to detect possible leaks in the underground water distribution system. These devices help identify unusual sounds or pressure changes that may indicate a leak below the surface—before it becomes visible or causes damage.

What To Know:
  • Marked Vehicles: ATS crews will be operating from clearly marked vehicles like the one shown here.
  • Identification: All ATS personnel will carry proper identification and should be able to present it upon request.
  • No Service Disruption: This work does not require entry into homes or businesses and will not disrupt water service.
  • Short-Term Presence: Survey activity will be brief at each location and conducted entirely from the public right-of-way.
Why This Matters:
Routine leak surveys are an essential part of maintaining a safe and reliable water system. Undetected leaks not only waste water and increase operational costs but can also lead to larger infrastructure problems over time. By identifying and repairing leaks early, the City can:
  • Reduce water loss and protect natural resources
  • Minimize costly emergency repairs
  • Maintain water pressure and service reliability
  • Support long-term sustainability of the City’s infrastructure

This proactive maintenance helps ensure that West Chicago continues to deliver high-quality water service to residents and businesses.

If there are questions about the leak detection program, contact the City’s Public Works Department. If suspicious activity is noticed that does not correlate with this activity, please contact the West Chicago Police Department.

Each participating DuPage community is highlighted in the Waves of DuPage: Beautiful Cities Public Art Project through a custom mural inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock prints.

On Friends of the West Chicago City Museum Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/FriendsoftheWestChicagoCityMuseum/, there was a brief history about the high school. “A High School District was not created in West Chicago until 1921, high school classes were held in several elementary schools as early as the 1870s. Overcrowding in the mid-1920s moved voters to approve building a dedicated high school. From a bond issue of $140,000, a sum of $23,750 was paid for the 12 ½ acre tract of land. The final construction figure was much higher. Construction was completed in 1926 with the first classes beginning September 23. The first class of 27 students graduated on June 11, 1927. Additions were made in 1956; in 1964, construction which practically doubled the size; and in 1978, when the swimming pool and other facilities were added.”

Others participating in the celebration were West Chicago Community High School Superintendent Kurt Johansen and Principal Limaris Pueyo, Community High School Board of Education members, Ward 1 Alderwoman Julieta Alcantar-Garcia, City Business & Community Relations Director Kelley Chrisse, West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission members, Gallery 200 members and staff from McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage. https://merleburl.com

Press the outside call button at the north entrance. Visitors will be buzzed in and may wait in the lobby for assistance from the Records Division staff.
