The City of West Chicago’s official Halloween Trick-or-Treating hours are from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 31.
As families prepare for this year, the City of West Chicago encourages parents to review the following safety reminders.
- Ensure you and your child are wearing light-colored and/or reflective clothing, so you can be seen in the dark.
- Avoid wearing masks that may limit your visibility; use face paint instead.
- Make sure costumes are short enough to avoid tripping hazards.
- Never allow someone to go trick-or-treating alone. Ensure there is always a parents or a group of friends present when heading out for the evening.
- If children are trick-or-treating with a group of friends, make sure their route is known and agree on a specific time when the children should return home.
- Always walk on sidewalks, never in the street.
- Cross streets at corners, using traffic signals or crosswalks where available, and always look both ways.
- Provide your children with a flashlight to be carried at all times.
- Apply reflective tape to your child’s costume or treat bag to increase visibility to drivers on the road.
- Only trick-or-treat at houses that have the front porch light on.
- Be cautious around animals and strangers, and never go into a stranger’s house.
- Make sure to inspect all candy before eating and throw away any that is open. If you do find candy that has been tampered with or appears suspicious, contact the West Chicago Police Department.
- If your children may be driving on Halloween, remind them to drive slowly and carefully through residential areas.
